Mathew's Gramophone Appliance

Post by sdrefs »

I recently purchased a Mathew's Gramophone Appliance (mechanical appliance for dancing figures in Mathew's patent model theatres for attachment to gramophones).

I have seen some of the theatres online while trying to get more info but have yet to be able to find another example of this gramophone appliance. Does anyone have any info on this item? I'm trying to see an example of the appliance working as mine is currently missing the base and I'm not sure if I'm inserting the spring wire correctly etc. Trying to find any info at all and hopefully get mine working again!

Any help, info, is appreciated, thanks!

Thanks. Yes, I'm trying to figure it out but hoping to get some help from someone who might have the same toy. Mine is missing the base so I'll need to make one but hoping to see someone else's so know how best to proceed. If I can get it going I'll be sure to post a video!

Shawn,

The phonograph toy you purchased is of British origin and a scarce item if found in complete working condition. Although we do not own one, we had to opportunity to photograph the toy and present it, along with over 500 other phonograph toys, dolls, and accessories, in our book titled "Phonograph Dolls and Toys." I've attached a copy of the page featuring the item. This is all information we have on this toy.
The book is available on EBay. Happy New Year and good luck with restoring your phonograph toy.

Thanks so much Rob! It is very helpful to see what the base looks like from the book photo!
