Pathé Model 100 grill

Post by randymullx »

I saw a posting recently where someone else had been trying to locate a grill for a Pathé Model 100 for years with no luck. I finally gave up and decided to see if I could create a reproduction and thought I would post the results in case it helps out someone else. My 100 is oak and is a very early version (it does not have a separate motor board or the universal tonearm…..mine has the early tonearm that was supplied with separate reproducers for vertical and lateral). Hopefully the dimensions for the grill are the same but that should be easy to confirm. I ordered some red oak ¼” plywood from Rockler but the actual thickness was about 5/32” so I glued two pieces together to get the thickness I wanted. I made the outer piece full size per the attached drawing but the inner piece is ¼” less on the bottom and ⅜” on the top which allows the grill to easily slip into the top and bottom grill slots in the cabinet. I scaled the dimensions as best I could from Model 100 photos. I’m not an accomplished woodworker and it took me months to complete. Now if I can just figure out what color the grill cloth should be.

Guilty as charged--I'm the other Model 100 owner. Very nice job you did of recreating the grille. My machine actually has a grille, but someone before me cut out the middle "Y" element, leaving a big arch in the middle instead of a couple of pointed cells. Presentable, and I didn't even realize it had been done until years and years after getting the machine (my very first, when I was still a young teen); not, then, a hot, front-burner issue, but something I'd like to rectify eventually. Here's a photo of my grille:

Very nice job. Did you use a scroll saw?

I experimented with several ways of cutting it out but ended up using a mini Jigsaw (mine is made by Proxxon).

This retired drafting and wood shop teacher gives that project an A.
