Fun With Gourds

Post by Jerry B. »

Yes, Gourd-O-Horns are back. They are not for everyone but not everyone has good taste. :D I just realized that goes both ways!

Yes, it's very curious... To me at first sight seems like a special Edison sales promotion for exotic lands as Papua or somewhere in deep Africa! :D

Didn’t Edison invent the gourd?

Feast your eyes on Gourd-O-Horn's newest creation. Our extensive staff of craftsmen and artists have combined talents to create the ultimate horn. It starts with a selection of one of nature's perfect gourds. The exterior is highly figured like an exotic hardwood and is finished in a clear lacquer to accentuate the natural beauty. Talented local artists were employed giving this horn an authentic Southwest flavor. The combination of nature's perfection and the best human efforts have resulted in the ultimate phonograph horn. :D ;) :? 8-)

I particularly like the Kokopeli figure and the expert laced leather work. I suggest you combine these ideas on the same horn. I assume you will be bringing these to the next APS Show. They certainly look like the "100 year old originals" but with the southwest spin.  :pig:

Btw.... These wooden things look massive, but I've noticed you install them in the reproducers directly, with no need for a crane (these have always seemed to me like orthopedic apparatus... :D )
An i wrong suspecting that your gourdhorns are extremely solid but very light?
I don't have a phonograph. But if I ever had one, I'd love to dress it with one of these horns! ;)

Every gourd horn that I've placed directly on the reproducer is lighter than a 14" black & brass horn so excess weight is not an issue. Even this horn is very light weight. I'd estimate the thickness of the finished horn is from ⅛" to 3/16". Good question.
