Record cabinet. What phonograph should go?

Nice cabinet, but Oak Victor IV's are non-existent. Go with an oak Victor III or Monarch. Victor D, Victor V (5) or Victor Monarch Special if you have a bigger budget (the D and V are larger machines). Any of those choices will look fantastic on that excellent cabinet. Would love to see how it looks when you have the machine on it!

The argument can be made that when Victor installed a back bracket, either rigid or taper arm set-up, the Victor MS became a Victor IV. So a back mount Victor R became a I, the Victor E became a Victor II, the Victor M became a Victor III, and the Victor MS became the Victor IV. The basis for this position comes from a Victor catalog that shows a rigid arm R, or what appears to be an R, and at the top of the page it says "Victor I."

Is there other evidence supporting this argument? I would love to hear of other hard evidence. Until then I'll wonder if the advertising executive in charge of that catalog decided that "Victor I" sounded more elegant or modern than "Victor R." Until there is additional evidence I will refer continue to refer to a machine by the marking on the ID tag. Other opinions?

I agree. I have a reprint of a 1902 Victor catalogue that shows a rigid arm Victor IV in an MS case. Case is described as "elaborate quartered oak with hinge top."

The same catalog shows and describes front mount Monarch and Monarch Junior, but the rigid arm versions are listed as Victor III and Victor II respectively.

I own an early L-door Victrola with the carving beneath the lid. Victor's advertising refers to it as "Victrola the 16th." But like Jerry, I think of it as a VTLA since that is what is on the tag. Even later, Victor's magazine adverts refer to the 8-30 as the Credenza model. I am a bit inconsistent on those machines. I call them all Credenzas regardless of what the tag says.
