I have heard of
new Beatles 78s being pressed in shellac compound in limited numbers and then purposely being
antiqued.
Sometime not even that much effort has been made.
I have also heard of "finds" in open air markets. A stack of old 78s will contain a Beatles recording. The buyer will take the 78 and put it in the middle of a small stack of other records.
"How much for the stack?"
The vendor will look through the stack and stop at the Beatles record. A phone call will be made. The vendor will say, "Maybe this is very rare. $XX.00 for this one."
The buyer will take it back home to Europe or North America and play it only to find that it is a recording of Indian devotional music. Close inspection of the record will reveal that there is a fake Parlophone label pasted on top of the original Indian label.
