Thought I would add my two cents worth to this old topic.
I own two machines with thumb lever-type Columbia Analyzing reproducers, a BI and an Open Works, and neither will hold a soft tone needle very well, the BI not at all in fact, so using such sophisticated tools as a hack saw, a file, a hand drill and a propane torch I made a new needle bar assembly out of a piece of ¼”x1/4” steel and parts from an crumbling, pot metal off brand reproducer I had.
I have kept the original intact and it could be reinstalled in minutes, but for now I am enjoying being able to use soft tone and triangular bamboo needles where previously I was stuck with loud tone only.

Or, you could look for this accessory, though I've only ever seen one in over 30 years of collecting!!!
