Loomis portable phonograph

Post by nostalgia »

Does someone know this brand? The portable looks well made to my eyes. The portable is for sale in my area (Europe). I made a google search on "Loomis and phonograph", and was only able to find an official Victrola retailer in New Haven, Connecticut named Loomis. http://www.victor-victrola.com/Connecticut.htm
I don't know it they are associated with each other...

It's clear! They must have been also selling these aftermarket portables of late thirties with their own brand!

It would be nice to own a good quality off brand machine that you knew exactly where it came from.
That building can be seen on streetview. 833 Chapel Street.

I wonder what could still be in the cellar?
There was an old music store in Syracuse NY- Stone Piano- that had old piano rolls a QRS wire piano roll rack and some old Zenith sets in the cellar.
The street elevator no longer worked so how they'd be removed from the cellar would have been a major undertaking. No old phonographs or records.
Does anyone on the list live near Loomis ?

That looks like it might be a rebranded model o-10 sold by RCA Victor.

That old dream of us collectors... to find treasures in the cellar of old music stores!
Actually I found one in 1979... and bought many NOS 78s from them. They were still a music store, but the 78 era had passed, and they did mainly microgroove records and guitars, blank sheet music paper, school flutes and these things.

Interesting observations!

OrthoFan, I was able to find a photo of the RCA-Victor Victrola O-10 online, it for sure has many similarities, but also differences.
I know nothing about these portables myself...

I see what you mean. I had posted using my smartphone. Now that I'm at the desktop PC, I can see several major differences.

I did a little more searching and spotted this one sold by Birch -- https://m.facebook.com/105237384418119/ ... 60/?type=3 -- which looks to be a near exact match.

Unfortunately, I am not able to access FB myself and don't see any photos on the link, since I am not registered there, but I am sure many in here will be able to see it...

Odd...I'm not on Facebook either, but the photos showed up, (along with a message telling me to join Facebook.)

Anyway, here's some screen captures. The poster noted that this is the model 57D. I googled it and came up with a number of photos -- https://www.google.com/search?q=Birch+5 ... 8&dpr=1.54

It looks like all of the components are a match, along with position of the crank, the crank holder, etc..
