Blue faux crocodile material - HMV 101

Post by poodling around »

I don't think it is one of the rare very dark blue crocodile HMV 101's as the pattern is fairly obvious ? On the other hand it is in the sunshine so maybe it is ?

Does anyone have an opinion about this I wonder ?

I need to start by stating that I have nearly zero knowledge of HMV 101's, 102's, etc. However, the example you show certainly has the "look" of authenticity and the patina that only age can bring. Why do you say it's fake?

Sorry Jerry, I didn't express my-self very well.

I just mean't that it is not real crocodile skin. It is a genuine gramophone. Perhaps I should have used the word 'faux'. I have tried changing the thread title - but it still seems very clumsy ! :(

I have read on the forum that there are very few 'Dark Blue' HMV 101 models - they were soon altered to a lighter blue colour. Therefore I wonder which one this is ?

It's a standard blue crocodile model. The uncommon dark blue 101 is not crocodile finish, just the usual smooth rexine. I can see why they were unpopular, because as the dark blue was classed as a de-luxe model, it was more expensive, but in fact it's hard to tell it from the standard black version, apart from having a rexine-covered motorboard.

Ah ! Thank you very much Barry.

So the blue crocodile 101 just remained standard through-out and it is the blue cloth one which stated out a darker colour, and is rarer as it soon became a lighter blue.

I understand now.

Fantastic !

It's just as Barry said. A standard blue crocodile grained rexine "Deluxe" 101. The dark blue 101 is not very exciting anyway. It does almost appear to be black.
