Re: Phonograph Feature in Japan

I understand little bit of Japanese, and I have seen this video for some time. It was originally posted on a Japanese Phonograph Forum website about 7 years ago.

The phonograph shop shown at the beginning of the video is "Shellman", located in Tokyo, which specialize in selling acoustic phonographs as well as lots of early records. There was a good documentary about the shop on YouTube, but it is gone since the channel was terminated for violating copyrights.

The machines they have are always in an excellent condition, but the problem is they sell these things way, way, expensive - They sell HMV 99 machines (complete with accessories plus original Key/instruction manual) for 950 dollars!

The reason they have shown those records from the 50s is because those 50s records are not their selling products (i.e. leftovers). They have large stocks of G&Ts and acoustic Victrolas as well as many stuffs from 1920s and 30s. Last year, they started to make CDs with those records by using their specially built "HOTOGY 95" phonograph (has a horn - 3.5 feet in diameter - made out of leather), although they are restricted to distributed only in Japan which really disappoints me...:-(

They also do occasional Record concerts as well.

You can visit their website at here; http://www.shellman.jp.

The encounter with the busted record at around 3:33 is very realistic. How many times do I wade through dozens or hundreds of records and finally find a good one, only to discover that it is damaged? Way too often, sadly.

What's the model of machine that plays around 3:45 in the video? (I'm not familiar with all the EMG and Expert models.)

I wish I knew what they were saying.

Glad you liked it! I found out about it from a subscriber to my videos from Japan. I am curious
too about the models since I am not very familiar with them.

Thanks for the insight! Neat stuff. That Hotogy 95 is crazy big.
