Could it maybe just have had the chrome removed - leaving a brass effect ???????

Nah, I believe it's one of those oxidised finishes used in several hmv machines, as the 1A, 152/3 and others...

Anyone knows which horns did these machines bear? Were they the same horns as the 163, etc?

No, they had saxophone style horns, like the 511 etc.

I could be mistaking it for another finish, but I think that soundbox is Florentine Bronze.

No, both the 153 and the 158 had a version of the 157 horn.
The 153 had the No.5a soundbox and the 158 had the No.16, both in Florentine bronze.
