That's a good start, but you need to get a replacement scratching device for him or her- like a sisal rope covered pole that stands vertically on the floor or cardboard scratch pad.

Perhaps lemon oil or a similar kindly cat repellant sprayed next to the machine. I've had the same problem and it worked!

For the past 35+ years, I have had two or more cats in my homes and absolutely nothing would stop any one of them from going exactly where they wanted to go. In fact, trying to influence them seems to increase their resolve.

When I was working in our furniture store, my boss restored this bedroom suite with lacquer spray balms, it was not a very good job, but the customers were happy.
He was standing there with a lit cigarette out of his mouth with the room filled with fumes _ I had to go home because the room was so thick.

A while later the customer called and myself and the other worker had to make a house-call to repair it after the cat tried to jump to the top chest.
It was a very tall jewelry/lingerie chest.
The cat didn't quite make it, and the top, sides and edges were covered in deep scratches.
It took all day to hide the damage.

The other day I applied Howard Feed and Wax to the side where my cat's been scratching. Howard's has orange oil in it. That seems to have helped.edisonplayer

Just found this related picture of a “piece of art” online. My cats are trying to do the same to my kitchen chairs. Fortunately not to my phonographs yet. :o
