Listening to internet radio I just realised that the most notorious and popular risqué song was of course: Love for sale. Cole Porter, who was famous for his lyrics just on the edge of decent, at his very best (or worst, whatever you like). In quite a few countries the censors allowed to melody to be played but placed a ban on the lyrics. The lyrics must be the most explicit around the time. Just change the four letter word love for a three letter one and you know what the song is about.
In hindsight it is incredible what they came away with back then. I quite well remember that even in the late 1960s (remember flower power, THE PILL, free sex anyone?) a song was banned by Dutch national radio because it contained the word 'pregnant' and indicated that the child was conceived out of wedlock.
Things have become far too explicit for my taste nowadays. But I love the way they played with words in the 1920s and 30s. May West could sing an innocent looking song and made it sound like total pornography.
I'm afraid we've lost that subtlety and nowadays to explicit things.
Slightly blue/risque private circulation 78?
