Re: Help please - Edison Polyphon Attachment
It's hard to believe how many original Polyphone variations are out there…..it’s like 50% of them are unique.
The Edison Standard was at one time called the “Number 2 machine”. On every original Polyphone Standard I have seen, there is a “2” cast on the bottom of the carriage.
By inferring, the stamp you see on Edison Home Polyphone attachments, except for the late National Phonograph Company carriage, is a number “1”. Which I’m thinking, was their number 1 offering for regular folks at the time. “Edison will not make a cheaper machine than the No. 2 type” and “the Gem was still two years ahead”. Ref. Frow, p.98.
The Spring Motor Polyphone attachments I have seen are stamped “POLYPHONE CHICAGO” on the left front side of the carriage.
I know of three Gem’s….and they are all different yet have the patent stamp..
There are 10-20ish copies of the Polyphone Standard, Home and Concert carriages out there…….with a very close look, it is apparent….yet if you don’t know the details to look for, it’s complicated.
I know of no reproduction Spring Motor or Gem carriages.
Like George said so well, if it has the “Patented” stamp, your probably good….yet it’s always wise to network with the great folks of this hobby to make sure.

Do you have an updated/finished picture of your project? Would like to see the finished machine....Did you find reproducers to complete it?
