GONE: 150+ 78pm records 1910s to 1950s

Post by Morell1 »

***PLEASE NOTE THAT I AM NOT GIVING AWAY THE RACHMANINOFF RECORD IN THE IMAGES BELOW. I CAN'T SEEM TO DELETE THAT IMAGE FROM THIS LISTING***

I'm giving away records I collected over 20 years. I don't think the collection contains any great rarities, but they were all records I selected because they appealed to me. I've attached a spreadsheet with a list of records and conditions--visually graded. Anyone who wants these has to pick them in Washington, DC--and I'll give away all or nothing. The median record is probably VG+. There are some in excellent condition, a handful are barely playable, but most are somewhere in the VG range.
  • Four records from the 1910s--Yiddish, WW!, jazz, waltz
  • Twenty-six records from the 1920s--mostly jazz, some classical
  • Eight records from the 1930s--Big band; Scene from Noel Coward
  • Seventy-five records from the 1940s--A lot of big band, Andrews Sisters, Dinah Shore, Frankie Carle, European Classical, etc.
  • Forty records from the 1950s--Nat King Cole, Billie Holiday, Dinah Shore, Slim Gaillard, Sarah Vaughan, etc.
A few highlights:
  • Nice, clean copy of John McCormack, Keep the Home Fires Burning (VG++)
  • (Bix Beiderbecke)--Jean Goldkette, Idolizing/Hush-a-Bye (visual G+, but still fun to listen to
  • Two VG copies of Paul Whiteman/Bing Crosby--Mississippi Mud/From Monday On
  • VG+ 12-inch Victor scroll of Noel Coward and Gertrude Lawrence reading a scene from Private Lives
  • Duke Ellington and His Famous Orchestra on the Master label performing The New East St. Louis Toodle-O/I've Got to Be a Rug-Cutter (VG+. Rug Cutter side is E-)
  • A couple of Hot Jazz Club reissues of 1920s Louis Armstrong and the Louisiana Rhythm Kings (VG+ and VG)
First person who wants them gets them.

This is a very kind offer. Hopefully a collector needing records or is new to the hobby will take them.

Thank you! I certainly hope someone takes them. I won't let these go into landfill. If nobody here needs them, I'll put them on craigslist. I've enjoyed these records, but I just can't keep storing them.

That Jackie Taylor Victor Scroll was the Boswell Sisters' debut record.

That's why I originally bought it! We're Boswell Sisters fans--including my 13-year-old daughter. We're trying to thin out the collections, and that was one we felt we could part with.

Nice. :)
I'm not a huge fan of vocal records from that era but a well done vocal refrain in a good jazz/ dance piece is nice, and Highway To Heaven is a good one. I have some of their work with the Dorsey Bros. and on some 12" Victor Young Brunswicks.

I have the Andrews Sisters' debut records with Leon Belasco and find them quite good, where (just personal opinion) I find their Decca stuff annoying. Same with Crosby- I much prefer him as a jazz singer with Whiteman, Arnheim, Lanin, and the Dorsey Bros. An amazing trailblazer... until he became a "personality".

Sinatra is the exception to that rule, but I still prefer his Harry James and Tommy Dorsey sides best overall.

I'm a Bing Crosby fan since a child, and similar things happen to me. Nevertheless, I love his singing of quiet songs of late thirties, songs by Kern, Van Heusen and Burke, and the like, those accompanied by John Scott trooper and Victor Young, of late thirties and early forties.
When a child, I knew Bing by the only EP my father had, with four songs from The King And I. I loved it. Then, at ten yo, my father brought home grandpa's 78s. The lot had a dozen Bing Crosby records, and it was a total discovery for me. Those were the 78s they had, and a couple with the sisters. And among them, there was a later reissue of Out Of Nowhere. I always noticed the difference in style between that sole record and the others... that younger, much urgent voice, i loved it.... At 15 I started with my own 78s, and the rest is story...
