Victor IV with 24B horn and elbow

Post by Phono-Phan »

I followed up on a lead from a fellow Forum member on this Vic IV with a 24B horn. It was a 10 hour roundtrip but well worth it. The elbow and crank are from a Victor VI. The crank is the slotted style and in rough shape. The motor also has the slotted shaft. I need to find a crank escutcheon for the case. I have had Victor IIIs with the slotted shaft motor but not a Vic IV. The horn and elbow had a brass rivet on top. I removed the rivet so I could get it apart. Other than that, the horn is in great shape. What are your thoughts as to whether or not I should have the horn polished and lacquered or just leave the "patina"? I am working on a Victor VI that has the wrong horn so this would be a great one to put on it. I did replace the rivet with a 6-40 machine screw to fill the hole.

about 55 years ago I bought a Victor V with that horn on it. I was nice, but I wanted it shiny. I saw with that thing between my legs, and semi-chrome polish for hours. It looked beautiful. Now 55 years later I look at it and think I should do it again I didn't put anything on it at the time. I was a high school junior then LOL

Not sure who it was that was nice enough to give you the "tip" to hunt this down, but that was mighty nice of whoever did it.

The machine looks great. I think the horn & elbow look fine as they are, and if it were mine I do not think I would polish it. Since there are reproductions known of the 24B horn, letting one show a dignified age would make clear that it was the real McCoy. As for the alligatoring on the mahogany case, tempting as it may be to shine it up (as in--I'd probably polish it--) you might be better off leaving that one to show its age as well. It is in beautiful shape as it is.

With pieces this nice, sometimes all they need is a new reproducer gasket or two, a back flange, and some oil and grease. But about the felt on the turntable--does that look original? I'm used to seeing green felts on Victors.

I am of the same mind as VanEpps. I' leave it alone. As for the felt, Ibelieve it to be original. I have a victor M(onarch) with the same color felt, and I am reasonablysure it is original. Ialso have a Columbia with red felt to match a red horn. I believe both the horn and felt are original to that machine. Although greenis the most common, I think a variety of colors were used. Perhaps those who have collected far longer than I might want to add something on this topic.

I don't have any plans on doing anything with the finish. I did replace what was on the turntable. They had a leather looking vinyl on it. I have two other Victor IVs and they have a brown color felt on them. This is the closest I could come to the color on the other IVs. The more I look at the horn and elbow make me want to just leave it alone and not polish the horn. The patina on both match very nicely. I hope that my lead on another Victor VI that has the wrong horn and elbow on it happens so this horn and elbow can go where they belong.

Is this true? I've seen reproductions of the smaller size Flower horn #19 but that's all. Others?

Oh NEAT. If I am wrong about that, then that's a good thing.

I have the #19 flower horn in black steel, like most other collectors, and it is proudly sitting on my Victor III. In brass that'd be a mighty impressive size for a horn. The 24B is one of those horns I'll probably only see in a show or a (better-funded) collection.

The reproduction No.19-B horns are that ‘modern brass’ and don’t really look right as far as the finish on the metal itself.
