What kind of machine had a spherical tonearm joint like that? Or should one smoke it?

Looks to me like the product of an imaginative do-it-yourself enthusiast. Certainly has nothing to do with an HMV 101!

It could be from one of those German machines with wooden parts in the tonearm?
