Okay... I could not resist this thread! I have tons of old ads and some of them made it into my book on the Granby phonograph. For a moment in time, Granby phonographs created quite a sensation in the phonograph world - well, that is what their advertising and marketing would lead one to believe...

I found this recently. It seems to add some insight into the reasoning behind the design. http://www.mulhollandpress.com/styled-2 ... index.html
I think that the fact that it was fairly unadorned helped to make it acceptable and once it was acceptable, they could make the cabinets more elaborate.
