CL - Red Paillard Model 302 - Abbotsford BC

Post by Lah Ca »

Red Paillard Model 302

$150 CDN about $112 US or €108

Abbotsford is some distance out the Fraser Valley from Vancouver, BC. It is close to the Sumas border crossing into Washington State.

The ad does not have enough photos. There are some visible cosmetic problems. A quick asking price search shows that the asking price here is probably not unreasonable for a unit reported to be in good working condition.

I should probably go look at this ... hmmm ... a considerable drive ...

A Nice (and Very Charming) Review of the 302

https://youtu.be/RXCm_j9Zrog

It offers an analysis of the innovations and strengths and weakness of the 302 (and Paillard machines in general). There is lots of praise for the Paillard reproducers but there is also an assertion that the reproducer is major overkill for the small size of the 302 composite metal/wood horn.

Main take away: don't put grease on the noise reducing fibre gears that connect with the governor worm gears, dry lubricants only. A non-working machine should be approached with care.

Palliard, a company which I had never previously heard of, had an interesting history. They were intertwined with the well-known Thorens and Bolex, the camera/projector manufacturer.

The logo at the bottom right hand corner of the lid is difficult to see, but I do not recognise it as Paillard.
The early Paillard trade mark was a hunting horn entwined with a cross, and the later one was in Art Deco style :

Many thanks, as always.

I asked the seller for more pictures and have received some.

These still do not show the small gold label in bottom right-hand corner of the lid clearly, something quite anomalous.

Another anomaly is the lack of metal corner protectors on the lid and case. I cannot find a picture of another machine exactly like this one. It is obvious from the pictures I have received that there never were any protectors--they are not just missing.

Everything else about the machine screams Pailard, however.

It is my current understanding that Paillard exported parts and un-badged machines to the US. So this machine may be a 302 variant, something custom for an American retail store.

The exterior of the case is in pretty rough shape. The single image from the CL listing is definitely best profile forward. I have not seen the bottom, yet.

It is a long drive to go out and see the machine in person. I have asked the seller for more information but have yet to hear back.

I would not worry about the lack of case corner protectors. My dual powered Paillard does not have them either :

It is all moot now. The machine is gone. If had lived closer, I probably would have bought it immediately, and then, perhaps, regretted the purchase as I added to the pile of other unaddressed projects. ;)

I will post the other pictures I got for interest's sake.
