My wife and I think it's a wonderful program. Obviously, this episode was a total dud however...

My mouth dropped open when the guy said "that is the way it should look" NOT !

Maybe they had a budget to work with and they were simply told to get it to work, but not to work well.

That show never really talks about the cost of things and what people can afford financially.
My understanding is that the work is done at no charge to the owners.

Shocking really, especially all those ignorant folk who have left positive remarks on the video . Left me feeling emotionally unwell especially when he says "This is what it should look like".
I've had so many people tell me I should watch The Repair Shop. Never again.
I feel sorry for the Fury family, the poor Opera has just halved in value. I still have Gilbert Fury's white EMG Xb Oversize. I won't be stripping it anytime soon.

Jerry is right. In return for appearing on the program, the work is done at no charge to the owners.
The production company (Ricochet not the BBC Steve) even made a modest contribution to our hotel bill.

"Competing" ??? The BBC don't have to compete with anyone - they just rake in one Billion plus pounds a year with the incomprehensible, (for all intents and purposes) compulsory 'licence fee' and, as you say, produce - well, just don't get me started !

With all due respect to you and your wife, the program is definitely of some entertainment value for some people but the episode itself was not a dud, the whole premise of the program is fundamentally flawed. The "restoration errors" made on the Opera are systematic of the manner in which many of the people working in The Barn approach each task in hand. It's just that we here recognise the hack job when we see it because we are all familiar with phonographs. Equally, I'm sure there are many specialists in other areas who would baulk at the prospect of some of the other heavy handed and inappropriate restorations they have carried out.

It is clearly not a program for purists, but more for people who simply want to see the happiness a restored item brings to its owners after a sometimes traumatic past.

We rarely see a very detailed exploration of the restoration techniques used as the program focuses more on the human element, so I would not suggest it has much educational value. It's just entertainment, being kind, but for some of us the message it sends out in terms of the more sympathetic restoration we ideally would wish to see, is not particularly accurate or helpful.

Yes, I appreciate the program isn't made by the BBC but as far as I know it is made for the BBC under their auspices and shown almost exclusively by the BBC so in my book they take the can! :D
