In an earlier PM exchange, Ripduf1 and I were talking about lid repair/replacement possibilities. It seems he has a salvaged top. He sent me some photos and they managed to answer the question I had posed: "how was the top panel fixed to the top?"

The answer is that the high, profiled side pieces contained a rabbet that holds the panel captive. Probably not earth-shattering, but really makes me lean toward a specific clamping approach while trying to salvage my original top. All I've got to say is: "Thanks John!".

I could not see clearly in the photograph. But was the original soundbox substituted with a Victor 2 on this machine?
