Best of luck. It’s surprising that things still turn up.

I recently received a copy of "the Victor Data Book" and on page 58 it describes these as Period Victrola Albums and says that "These albums have been found in 12" sizes only".

I own a full set and they came with my Circassian Walnut VV-230, (12" and 10"). I am not selling them, but I am curious about which machines you have that had 10”. I have written to Robert Baumbach to let him know that there was at least one set of 10” green albums produced.

I have a Chippendale and a Sheraton. I actually didn’t measure, just assumed there was a mix.

Wonderful that you have a complete set. And good to know they came in more than the period machines.

Thanks for the photos

Hi Django,

Beautiful machine!!!

If you look closely and compare the spines of the albums in your VV-230 to those found in a Period Model Victor, you will see a subtle difference. You will note the alphabet letter designations on the 230 albums are printed on small, round discs with a circular border, which are adhered to the spine. The alphabet letter designations on the Period model albums are printed directly on the spine itself. In machine catalogs of the era, Victor referred to the albums supplied with the VV and VE-230s as "special Victor record albums". All other lesser machines of that era which were supplied with albums, were supplied with albums described as just "Victor record albums". As you know, the top-of-the-line 230s came with a set of albums made up of four 10" albums and four 12" albums. Your albums are green, and both black and blue sets have also been confirmed (for the 230s) by trusted, knowledgeable collectors. The 12" examples SimpleLifers/Brian shows are, as far as I know, only for Victor Period models.

I discussed the differences between the albums found in the 230s and the various Period models about 10 years ago at the Union, IL show with Bob Baumbach and Paul Eddy (spelling?) of the Victor-Victrola Page. At that time, neither Bob or Paul had noticed the Victor catalog's mentioning "special Victor record albums" specified as being supplied with the 230s. To my limited knowledge, to date, only 12" Period model albums (those with alphabet letter designations printed directly on the spine) have been confirmed.

I'm still looking to complete my set of albums with alphabet letter designations printed on small, round discs with a circular border, which are adhered to the spine for my mahogany VE-230. Unlike yours, my set is black!

Interesting topic,
Bob

Thank you. I think that it’s beautiful too.

I noticed that letter on my 12” “D” album was lifted a bit, so I looked underneath and there was a letter E on the spine. It appears that Victor took period albums and simply added an adhered, circled letter. The big question to me would be if the 10” albums have a letter beneath the adhered piece. None of my 10” letters are lifting and I am not willing to risk damage to them, so it will have to remain a mystery for now. Maybe someone else knows. I will start a new thread in the machines category.
