2M reproducer questions

Post by Roaring20s »

Who made this unbranded reproducer?
What machine(s) does it belong to?

It has a sapphire ball styli, so I assume it is fine for both black and brown wax cylinders.
It came with a red banner home (#2511) and comes into contact with the mandrel in the lifted position.

Thanks,
James.

I'm pretty sure that's from a Dictaphone or Ediphone office machine, not sure which.

Ediphone reproducer. Incorrect for your application.

Thanks.

Would the sapphire ball itself work for 2M records?

James.

More wise colleagues may jump into this, but for what I've learned herein, the sapphire used for Ediphone cylinders isn't usable for standard 2m cylinders, for the thread in Ediphone is different, si probably different size of grooves. It could marr your cylinders of you use it.

James--yes, it is for an Ediphone machine. Many times people put these on a Standard or a Home, because they are the same size as a C or H, but the neck is shorter than a regular C or H, so putting a 14 in horn on it is a little harder--sometimes. The sapphire is in between the size of a 2M and 4M stylus, I believe. For someone who really is just getting a machine for display, and doesn't play it a lot, it will work with 2 and 4 minute cylinders, but just doesn't sound very good. As it is NOT a diamond, the chances of ruining an average cylinder are low, although I wouldn't play any VALUABLE cylinders with it. At the shows, I often pick these up cheap. And, like I said, if I have a friend who just wants a machine for more or less a display, I will use one of these on it, if I don't have another correct spare, and if my friends budget is not very high!

No hate responses, for me doing this, please! LOL!

By the way, the weight is so small that it doesn't really play with much volume. It looks like the weight might hit or cut into a cylinder, but the ones I have had have fit with no issues--but I would be cautious with a black wax cylinder!

Thanks Mike. I has at least hoping to have an extra stylus... oh well.

PS: Would the size of the ball work for a Pathé disc?

I have never tried one for playing Pathé records. I think the stylus there was closer to the 2M size. Although, I think that it would work! If you have a Pathé shaft with broken stylus, mount the Ediphone stylus and give it a try--it might work just fine!
