Some time ago, I was lucky enough to find an early Victor 6, SN# 1649. I found a large black and brass Victor horn in the house with it, which I am almost positive was being used with this machine. The horn has a 20 ½" bell and is roughly 28" long. I understand that early machines may have had a paper mache horn, but what other sort of horns might have been offered with the early 6 when new? I also have a wood spear tip horn which I may put on it.
Thanks.

Re: Horns offered on the early Victor VI
I acquired a very early (3 digit serial number) Vic 6 many years ago that needed a horn. Was lucky enough to buy a spear tip from the Smith's at the next Union show. As i learned much later, it was actually an early spear tip - much lighter in weight and with a square ring around the outer rim - perfect. I had read about the early paper mache black horns and always kept an eye out for one with no luck - never even saw one in person. Thanks to Rafael I finally found one at the Midwest Show last year. He even removed it from his machine and sold it to me separately! I now can switch horns and have a whole different look.

Kent,
Absolutely stunning! If I had known it was going to go on such a magnificent machine (and cabinet) I would have charged you more, haha!

Hi Mike= A couple years ago, I sold my early Vic 6, serial# 1212.... I had owned it for about 30 years. It now resides in a collection in TN.
It had a mahogany grained, brass bell horn that is considered very rare. George and Tim picture it in their "Accessories and Contraptions" book on page 20.... With full reference to that book, I'll include their picture of my horn. Also some pictures taken before I sold the machine.
And for anyone who does not have George and Tim's books, you are missing out on an incredible resource

Re: Horns offered on the early Victor VI
Here are some more horn options. My black japanned horn is black on the inside also. The Allen's horn with the birds painted inside has a date on it of Jan. 9th 1906. Not sure where that would fall in the production of the Victor VI models. The 24B is the all brass petaled horn and is quite heavy on the elbow. The mahogany spear-point horns also look pretty good. The Victor VI on the right is serial number 600 and has the slotted crank motor and pinned elbow. The other VI has the later threaded crank motor. The 24B horn and the one with the birds in it might be available at the Midwest Phonograph Show in June. I might also take the black one also.

Re: Horns offered on the early Victor VI
My best (slightly educated) guess:
1- The Victor VI was introduced with the black paper horn made in Japan. The war between Japan and Russia interrupted the supply of these horns. Next...
2- I suspect the Victor VI was supplied with a black metal body & brass belled horn. Next...
3- Victor then supplied the VI with the above horn with the body painted faux mahogany. Next...
4- Victor then supplied the Victor VI with the 24B Flower horn.
5- The final Victor VI horn was the big mahogany spearpoint.
Do others agree with this progression?

How did they get the finish on those paper maché horns so smooth? Was the paper laid up and then squeezed between male and female mold sections?
