minidisc recordings of thousands of 78 records

I thought that this was interesting enough to include in this section and not something you see every day.

I came across this as I am a huge fan of the minidisc format - and of course 78 records !

There is also a minidisc player thrown in if you don't own one !

Anyway: The seller states:

'Collection of dance band and jazz 78s on 550 plus Mini-Discs. Also included a MiniDisc player. (Pioneer) With 50 tracks on each disc, it is around 27,000 tracks, originally taken direct from my own 78rpm records. Track list supplied. There are some additional MDs with dance bands on BBC radio shows, and other related content of the period 1925 to 1936, British bands, American and European sides too'.

No, I didn't.

I must admit though that I was very tempted. The thing was, on the one hand I generally dislike jazz ("it's my music man") records and dance music to me can also sound 'all the same'. So, as far as the recordings are concerned I thought no. (Lets not talk about the BBC).

On the other hand, this seemed like excellent value when thinking about a 'minidisc 'bundle'. Probably worth about £ 1,300. The trouble there was - why would I need 550 minidiscs and yet another player.

So that leaves buying it (wiping the discs) and re-selling it in smaller amounts and making maybe close to £ 800 - £ 1,000 profit. I didn't think of that until later. The lot sold very quickly. I should have done that.

No, I didn't! I have no use for minidiscs or a player. I have thousands of 78s when I want to play that "filthy jazz" music or vintage stuff. Why listen on a digital copy? Yes, let's forget the BBC.

I'm strictly CDs for music and Blurays for films these days which means my modern gear can thankfully be limited to a Bluray player that does both things equally well. The rest, nah, you can keep it.

Substitute cd's for md's and I agree entirely.

I like to keep a few CD's to play in the car, but when I buy my next new car I will probably find that a CD player is no longer an option. The manufacturers now assume that I will connect the smartphone I don't have or want, and play the music stored in it.

Well, it is, in a way. I bought my current car new 2 years ago and like all other cars now it doesn’t have a CD player. Initially I missed it but a friend of mine convinced me to "rip" CDs and put the data on a USB stick. What my car does have is 2 USB slots so I can have the music from several hundred CDs to flick through via my "entertainment centre". Its very easy and convenient to use and much better than faffing about with CDs in the car.

I still spin CDs at home though, preferring their convenience to that of vinyl records and the sound quality compared to streaming.
