1914 Victrola IV spring Barrel

Post by chem_jv »

So, I am usually pretty good about these things, but this time I cannot figure it out. I know this is a really simple motor, it only has one spring, but I cannot figure out how to open this spring barrel. Any help that you can provide would be appreciated. I have rebuilt the rest of the motor already, I just need to remove the spring so that I can re-grease it.

I've never seen a VV-IV motor like that one. From looking at your photos it looks as though you should remove the two screws holding the winding bracket and the spring barrel should pull out. Once you have the barrel removed, the lid from the barrel should come right off to expose the spring. As always it is VERY IMPORTANT to completely wind down the motor before attempting this. (Let the motor wind down, then manually turn the spindle to wind it down even more)You will begin to feel a looseness in the spindle when the spring is completely exhausted. What is the serial number on this VV-IV ? I would be interested to know what year Victor used this style of motor...

I had the spring barrel out already. That is why the motor is so clean. I removed the two screws on the post that is pictured. The spring barrel then comes out as one unit with the post still attached. The only way to take that apart further would be to press out the winding ratchet gear pin and see if the unit comes apart after that. I started to try and push that apart, but if was being quite stubborn and I decided not to push my luck too much. I looked through the motor guide that you make reference to but did not find anything on the disassembly of this motor. When I had the barrel out, I was unable to find any way to open the barrel up. My 1916 XI and other motors that I have worked on all have the C-ring retainer clips with the top lid. This motor is completely different from those. I’ll post the serial number to this machine, as well as some more pictures of it once I get home tonight.

Remove the 2 screws & the bracket, then remove the barrel. Then you remove the centre arbor by turning the shaft in the oposite direction of when the spring is being wound. Sometimes they unhook from the spring really easy, & other times it can be a real pain! If the spring centre is really tight around the arbor, you may have to jiggle the shaft around quite a bit before the lug comes out of the pear shaped hole.
Once the arbor is out, insert a strong wood or brass dowel into the bottom hole & angle it so the end of the dowel touches the lid off centre.
You can then either get someone to strike the dowel while you hold everything in position, or what I do is hold the whole thing with my fingers holding the underside of the barrel & the dowel, and with my thumbs on the lid, I bash the end of the dowel sharply on the floor a couple times until the lid pops out. You'll be holding it tight, so your thumbs will keep the lid against the barrel, so you dont have to worry about the spring escaping from the barrel.
You can use a screw driver instead of a dowel, but you risk scoring or denting the lid if you do. Brass or wood wont leave any marks being softer than the steel.

Additional pictures as promised. The serial number is 131932 D. the license notice and motor tag are intact and only show minor staining. The price of $15 is written in the license notice. The motor part number is 2000. I'll try and take apart the spring barrel tomorrow using the information that has been provided, thanks.

Thanks for everyone's help. It came apart just as suggested. I was pretty sure that was how it came apart, I just wanted to check before doing anything rash. Once I got the barrel open, I found the spring had a split in it. It's not broken all the way through and still usable (well sort of, it's only a matter of time), so since I have it apart I am going to replace the spring and make it good as new again.
