Here in the UK, phonographs have reproducers and gramophones have soundboxes.

The Astra and the Pianina were two of the largest soundboxes sold in the UK, and I have photographed them with a G&T Exhibition to illustrate just how large they are. Indeed the Astra is so large that the rear coupling is offset to enable it to fit a gooseneck.
Another interesting feature of the Astra is the diaphragm, which is made of compressed silk.

Here are six soundboxes, some British and some Continental, from the acoustic era :

The Automatic Soundbox is a good example of a device which did what few people wanted done.
It's unwise use of pot metal for the plunger has ensured that few survive in working order.

Here are a few of mine. The first one top left is called “The Salon” Sound Box, Swiss-Made. The golden one is identical to the late Edison needle cut portable reproducer-except for a different front bezel. The black one is a Thorens No.16, then an RCA Victor with the nice art deco style “V”, and finally a Carryola Master “Add-A-Tone”.

I bet the astra and pianina weren't as large as the BROS soundbox I have ?

The BROS is huge !

I think unique soundboxes (well, I feel sure yours is and unless a box full of the silver / black ones is found so is mine) - with unique diaphragms.

Wonderful things !

3 - Violin Spruce diaphragm
4 - Edison
5 & 6 - Gem Recorder ??? (I could use help here!)
7 - Gold and Nickel Improved Concerts
8 & 9 - Mobley for a Victor

I'm enjoying this thread!
