Pathé Salon No.7 on UK eBay.

Post by epigramophone »

An unusual machine to find in the UK, but with a few condition issues including :
Significant woodworm damage to the plinth, some paint loss on the horn and the ball sapphire stylus is missing.

It is a nice machine and uncommon even in France, but its missing eaten-up low end, including the feet, is a killer - it is a very conspicuous flaw and unfeasible to repair. Its door is warped as well.

Certainly unusual. I like the general 'look' of the wood but wood worm is always a big 'no' to me. Even if it is (apparently) long gone.

Not a design of gramophone I would personally like in my collection either. It looks like a gramophone shoe-horned into a cupboard to me.

What I say is very subjective of course and depends a lot on my personal preferences - so quite rightly this could this be very much 'the pride' of someone elses collection.

Might be interesting to hear from anyone who likes this gramophone ? Or doesn't.

I not only like but own a variant of the above machine, the Salon 5 - very similar but without the columns of the nr 7. It is great to play the 50 cm discs, its motor is very powerful, the same as the one fitted on the Concert A (which has an external horn). It is also aesthetically pleasing to my eyes, in line with the changing times that made external horn machines fall from grace - certainly much nicer than any internal horn contemporaneous competitors, but as you say, taste is subjective. There are several variants of this machine, some in ornate 1.80 meter-tall cabinets with a great looking muse hiding the horn, others that look like a church confessional including a curtain, and the rarest of all, a unique ornate cabinet model electrically-powered that is automatic, coin-operated and only plays bespoke records (numbered and of a diameter made only for that machine). I have seen this model at work in the private museum of a fellow collector.

I'm with you. I love these machines; they are the very epitome of French cafe chic, although I'm slightly biased as I like most Pathé machines. It's such a quirky design but it makes so much sense.

As for condition, the horn is very good, the woodworm is expected and quite common in this wood and can be treated and the missing sapphire is expected these days. As you know, the last three machines I bought from France were all also missing the sapphire.

My biggest problem is S P A C E ! What do I sell to make room for it or do I get an extension built?

Is it me, or was this machine recently sold at auction already?

Did it actually have any bids in the first place ?

Yes, 2 bidders, 3 bids with 2 days to go. Was only at £205 though so I suspect seller impatience played a part in decision to end prematurely.

Oh, that's a shame. There may also have been one or two bidders ready to bid right at the end as well.

The people who wanted this must have been very disappointed. Maybe it will re-emerge again some-where. (Maybe in a French cafe).
