My Newest Aquisition: Red Banner Edison Home phonograph

Post by Ben the phono man »

Hello all,

Just the other day I acquired this beautiful Edison Home Red Banner phonograph serial #h/30280 from a good friend of mine. It also came with 60 cylinders including one Brown wax recording of "marching through georgia" (+ home recording at the end) I have not played it yet due to not having the proper equipment. When I first got the machine, it was without a belt and the cabinet appeared to be pretty rough, there was a sticker stuck to the back. The bedplate was also extremely dirty. The reproducer was rebuilt previously with a new sapphire. Here are some pics of it before I touched it.

I spent the night working on the machine, cleaning the cabinet and bedplate, and doing a little motor work. Here is the final product after 7 hours of work.

I am looking for the eyelet for the handle as it was missing one. if George sees this, if you don't mind looking at the serial number and finding an approximate date! Thanks!
I have also included a video of the machine playing with a small reproduction 14 inch horn playing a berlin phono works cylinder of Enrico Caruso's first recording.

Edison Home #30280 left the factory in April 1900.

What kind of treatment did you give the black paint on the bedplate? Looks very nice!

Jerry,

All it takes is some goop on a clean rag, white t-shirt preferably so you can see once it stops excreting dirt and nicotine residue (which there was a lot of). Then I followed up with some car wax. I've heard Meguiers is very good, but I have not gotten the chance to try it.

Thanks

Excellent! I love nicotine! It comes off really easy and seems to have a preservative effect on whatever it's covering up. Some of the nicest, original nickel plating I've seen was revealed after removing loads of nicotine. Thank you smokers!
