Rare HMV 101 in dark blue ????

Errr, actually, no, they haven't! But how could they possibly get it cheaper than before when they bought it for what is now the start bid when it was just a buy it now option?

Well, it only sold for £ 73 plus £6.99 postage. Disappointing low price (some black ones go for more ?) - but a pleasant surprise for the buyer I guess ?

Some black ones go for more? I'm not sure where you're looking but I haven't seen any good condition 101s in black sell for less than £100 in the past 20 years.

There are plenty of substandard condition ones on Ebay selling below £100 but rarely anything worth buying.

One seller, "bjosephineb", only sells 101s and 102s and his prices are over £135 usually. If he can keep churning them out like daily newspapers someone is clearly buying them!

It's funny how you hardly ever see a dark blue HMV 101 then (like buses) 3 or 4 pass through within a week or two of each other !

This one seems to have a fairly low production / serial number as well.

On the other hand it has bits missing and maybe the wrong motor ? Nothing a donor machine could not provide though.

I have never seen a rare dark blue 101 - although I often think I have but have been mistaken.

Is this one I wonder ?

That is why this version sold so poorly. It is dark blue, and the main recognition features are :

Nickel plated external fittings. On black 101's they are painted black.
Blue turntable cloth. Black 101's have brown cloth.
Dark blue painted horn mouth. Black on black 101's.

Yes, you're 100% correct and it seems quite obvious really which makes the querying over whether this one or that one is blue, rather odd.

It arrived .......... and I must say it is very nearly in perfect condition.

The motor turned out to be the original HMV 59 (so that will not need replacing) and works fine - the original handle must have been lost and the previous user used a garrard one or something.

So, this afternoon I am fitting a replacement speed control, replacing three missing screws, the winder and the turntable clip.

Then ...... 'Hey Presto' !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It was excellent value and I am very pleased. This will compliment really well my dark blue crocodile HMV 101 ........... and you know what ? I actually really like the colour. (What did the buying public know about colour choice back in the roaring 20's !).

Oh, and thank you so very much to epigramophone and steve for their help in confirming that it is indeed dark blue !!!
