Oak record cabinet, very simple and fun

Post by VanEpsFan1914 »

Oak record cabinet turned up today when I was looking in an antique mall for a dresser. I didn't find a suitable dresser, because I want Victorian / Eastlake in walnut to match my bedstead. But I did find something from the plainer side of things, an old oak cabinet that will be a nice stand for the "Rip van Winkle" Victor III which is living in an original carry case in the closet. (Dyslexic Genius Brett Hurt knows which machine I'm talking about.) This should also go alright with some Arts and Crafts era furniture as well.

Here it is temporarily sitting in the living room. I wanted to see how they go together. A Victrola IV looks nice here too because it's little, but I need a stand for the III.

I've never had a cabinet or stand for this machine to properly display it, in all the years I've had it.

Needle bowls in door are pretty nice but I will have to carve a new lid for the missing one. Much easier to carve than to buy an unobtanium antique part.

What I can't figure out is whether or not I should go ahead and do dividers for it or if I should make it work with the shelves it has. Someone long ago put modern style shelves in it and it is a nice little cabinet this way, but if I can figure it out what company made it, I'll have an idea what style shelves and dividers to make.

It's pretty cool. If someone knows or has some idea where to look for record cabinet info please let me know.

Anyway that was my first one of these I found in the wild, and I feel I did well for my $59.
Happy hunting
Charles

The needle holder with the sliding top for the used needles is seen on a lot of Herzog cabinets.

Same as the Herzog here.

No way! Did I buy a Herzog by accident? James the one you have has got the same door latch as mine, too.

I have to check some back issues of trade journals or something.

Mine has no pullout shelf and plainer legs. Where did you get the catalog picture though?

Nice to have these cabinets…beats putting them in cardboard boxes on the floor

If it was mine, and I wish it was, I would replace the shelves with dividers. You will soon tire of shuffling through piles of records stacked horizontally to find the record you want to play, which will always be near the bottom.
