We are accustomed to seeing cabinet gramophones with their legs amputated, but look at this.
To add insult to injury, the gold plated fittings tell us that this was once one of the better Victrolas.

No doubt its a "tabletop" gramophone now as auctioneers usually refer to them.
It was never a highly coveted model though, even in the US.

It's the remains of a fairly early Victrola XVI.

And as with other remains, deserving only of a decent burial?

The guy apparently wanted an HMV portable, couldn't find one and made his own...

Re: The worst amputation yet.
I "try" to not get too sentimental about old phonographs but it doesn't work.... LOL. When I see things like this, it "turns my stomach" a little. I have a hard time looking for more than about 5 seconds..... Seriously, that normally doesn't happen to me with antiques, but something about these chopped Victrolas just "gets to me...."

Re: The worst amputation yet.
Someone posted a link in this forum recently to an idiot who stamps on antiques and crushes them with his size tens for some unknown reason. I won't provide the link here for fear of potentially promoting foot traffic (sorry, about the pun) to his sorry cause. Anyway, he had a remarkably well preserved, pristine very early Decca portable in a stitched case and proceeded to completely destroy it under foot for a good ten minutes, all captured on camera and uploaded to that video site. That made me feel quite sad for a few weeks whenever I thought about it.Granby wrote: Mon Jul 24, 2023 12:47 pm I "try" to not get too sentimental about old phonographs but it doesn't work.... LOL. Re: The worst amputation yet.
I seem to remember that "he who should not be named" once filmed himself setting fire to a gramophone and posted the unhappy spectacle on his YouTube channel. At least the supply of his videos is now finite.

Yes indeed? He used to treat gramophones a bit rough, but clearly enjoyed them...
