Edison brown wax Peerless Orchestra - what title is it?

Post by max_phenol »

Hi,

Can anyone please identify the title in the announcement of this (unmarked) Edison brown wax cylinder? I only can make out "... played by the Peerless Orchestra - Edison Record".

Thanks!
Helmut

I hear your difficulty, I think that announcers were sometimes given the written title of a piece in a an other language and did the best they could.
Not enough of the tune to name it from that, but if it sounds Spanish or Italian or French in style for example that might explain the problem.

Who wrote that it is not easy or even impossible to find out the title? You all were wrong!

A very good friend of mine, a gentleman in the USA, has the answer for me. It is:

Edison No. 7973, brown wax cylinder, released November 1901
(Rozmysli si Mařenko) Sekstert ze Smetanovy, Prodane Nevesty

The announcement only says "Rozmysli si Mařenko". It's a sextet from Smetana's "Bartered Bride", Romance

Thanks so much Mr. F.

As suggested a non-English title so great to know what it is now I wonder if it was listed as Bohemian. Good to know that a classical sextet was part of the repertoire as well as the more commonly found cakewalks etc. that the peerless orchestra performed.

(Rozmysli si Mařenko) SeksteRt ze Smetanovy, Prodane Nevesty

Hi,

According to p. 42 and p. 94 of Edison Cylinder Records, 1889-1912, there is a minor typo (i.e. extra letter) in your citation above.
I have capitalized the added-R in question which may now be removed. ;-)

Best
Allen

Thank you, Allen - well spotted!

So, minus the "r" the title correctly is:

Edison No. 7973, brown wax cylinder, released November 1901
(Rozmysli si Mařenko) Sekstet ze Smetanovy, Prodane Nevesty
