Amberola 30 numbers

Post by vfw1948 »

My Amberola 30 has serial #42265, cabinet #15, and reproducer #114610.
Is there some place I can look up these numbers to find any further info about my Edison?
It seems to be an earlier model, has a speed control knob and a little nickel plating left on reproducer.
Any help appreciated.

Vern.

Vern,

You're right - - the speed control knob mounted above the cover, and the nickel-plated reproducer are signs of earlier production. Unfortunately, no lists of Amberola 30 serial numbers with dates have yet been discovered (at least I don't know of any). According to George Frow in The Edison Cylinder Phonograph Companion, 1994 Edition, page 181, Amberola 30 No.55517 was built by January 1916. If your Amberola has two set screws to hold the reproducer, and a spiral groove cut in the end of the mandrel shaft to accept a collar and allow adjustment, it was manufactured after September 1915. Judging by your serial number, I expect your machine was produced pretty close to September either way.

I'm afraid that's the best I can do. Maybe someday those lists will turn up...!

Mine has the 2 set screws and the spiral groove in the end of mandrel shaft.
So at least that is a fairly close date.
Thanks for the info, George.

My later Amberola 30 also has two set screws etc. #50631. So this was manufactured between September- December 1915
