Edison Suitcase Home

Post by Phono-Phan »

I am working on an Edison Suitcase Home. I noticed some strange marking on the bottom of the motor board. There are four stars and an X scratched on it. Does anyone know if these were made from the factory or when it got repaired sometime in its life? Or, just someone getting creative?
Thanks and Merry Christmas to all.

Looks to me like someone got a little creative. My guess is someone’s kid got under the bedplate and scratched those in there with a penknife. One would think if this were a factory practice, they’d be less conspicuous.
On the other hand, if that was done in the factory by a bored employee, quality assurance must’ve been asleep when this machine rolled down the line

I've seen at least two other early Home Phonographs with similar markings, including the one pictured below. As to meaning, I have no idea.
