Average price for a cylinder record cabinet?

Post by Edisonfan »

Quick question? What is the best price for a cylinder record cabinet. I found a four drawer cylinder cabinet, with the pegs in the drawers, but the dealer wanted $1,500.00.

Paul,

The best price for a cylinder record cabinet is free.

Seriously, much depends on the style of the cabinet. I can think of a cylinder cabinet with drawers I'd pay several thousand dollars for if I could only find one, but there's a different cabinet with drawers that's been on eBay for months with a Buy It Now of $1350. Like cars, different cabinet go for different prices. If you post a photo of the cabinet you found, I'm sure you'll receive plenty of advice.

For the moment, $1500 sounds pretty high for a run-of-the-mill cylinder cabinet. I sold an all-original cylinder cabinet missing 3 of its 100 pegs last year at Wayne for $150. It was very plain.

Thank You George! Maybe on my next day off, I'll go back and take a photo of it. The cabinet was not very ornate, rather plain. Just an Oak cabinet. To me, it looked like a normal chest of drawers, that happened to have pegs and locks.

Paul,
Was this Cabinet in a antique Dealer store? or private sale?
Alot of times when buying this stuff from a antique dealer they way over price things. So if he is asking that much figure its worth half that, if that even. If its very plain looking with no carvings on it or not a good size one then its worth no wheres near that amount.
I go to the dealers all the times on the weekends looking for Records, machines Ect.. I saw a vv-80 in the corner, and it was not in the best of shape and he was asking 750 for it??
I told the guy i have been collecting and restoring these machines for 15 years and told him for that machine its way over priced about 500.00 over priced.
So dont think if you go into a antique dealer your going to get a good deal, because half of these people assume its old its rare and worth money, or they use the other saying and gauge " Oh i saw on on ebay just like it sell forsale for that amount"..
sure bud.. just someone else like you using ebay to set a price :)

Here's a fairly average one on Craigslist in my area (Albany NY) for $120 - it's a boxy one door cabinet with pull out shelves, all the pegs are missing. The price is fine but it would take up more floor space than I feel it's worth.

so far as standard, non-herzog, non-specialty cylinder cabinets go, I'd think that those with drawers as opposed to a door (or doors) and shelves, would tend to cost a bit more, as they're just less common - and especially if the pegs are intact. speculation as to the one you found could go on forever, so why don't you just snap a photo when you find the time and post it, then I'm sure you'll get some more definitive answers specific to the one you're considering (nice find though, regardless... I've seen them often enough at shows and on ebay, but only come across one or two drawered versions "in the wild").

Showing my ignorance here  : in a cabinet like that, how do you actually take cylinders in and out, especially in the third or fourth row of the pegs and on the lower shelfs? Or are these pull-out shelfs :?:
Thanks

Andreas,

The shelves pull out, most have little retainers on the ends of them to keep the whole thing from being pulled out too far and the whole thing crashing to the floor.

In addition with some cabinets there are little hooks on the inside of the door to hold up the shelf.

OK, that makes sense. From the craigslist picture you could not see that.
Thanks
