Soundbox

Out of curiosity, does anyone know anything about this soundbox? All I can tell you is that it came to me about 50 years ago attached to a rusty tonearm and a horn with an oblong, slatted mouth as if from a table or cabinet model. It did have an aluminium diaphragm originally, but as that had a huge tear in it, I replaced it many years ago with a mica one. As to the size, it does fit snugly on an HMV goose-neck tone-arm. It would look quite pretty, I think, if it were cleaned up a bit.

Generic sound - box manufactured for the trade , the brand name would have been on the now missing metallic label that would have been glued to the top courtouche. Brand name labels would have been applied in the factory to the order of the gramophone manufacturer or wholesaler . Common brand names seen on this design of sound-box are Maxitone , Dulcetto , Mayfair , Songster. There were many others. Regards

Thank you for your reply, Dulcetto. Interesting about the missing label suggestion. I must admit, I have never seen a diaphragm guard like it before. Its quite a nice design. I think I will clean it up.

I have never seen the Songster name on that style of mask -- but the stylus bar and its mounting are typical of Songster sound boxes, so they may have been the makers. Most Songster sound boxes say Songster on them, so maybe this type was reserved for 'branding'.
