Beecham's Pills.

Post by epigramophone »

The British conductor Sir Thomas Beecham (1879-1961) used the family fortune from Beecham's Pills to finance the production of operas and orchestral concerts from the 1910's until the outbreak of WW2. Here is a novel use for the pills :

Today, GSK (formerly Glaxo SmithKline) is the corporate descendent of the family concern responsible for Beecham's pills. A year or so back, to focus on vaccine development and marketing, it spun off its consumer products division into a separate entity called Haleon.

Apparently Thomas Beecham was hounded by his local church to contribute money for replacing all the worn hymn books in the church. To calm the hounding, he then said he would organise and cover the costs of the replacements, which made the church elders very happy. New hymn books were perfect, and the community was thankful for his great generosity.

come the Christmas Service at the end of year, Hark the Herald angels was on the Hymn board. People turned to the relevant page and started to sing "Hark the herald angels sing, Beecham pills are just the thing........"

Beecham pills are now known as Sixlets, with the same medicinal value as the originals...
