How can I safely transport an Edison Home Phonograph?

They're not so delicate. I put mine on the car seat and put the seat belt around it. You might also put a small wad of bubble wrap under the lid to lightly apply pressure to the carriage, to keep it from sliding and jumping around.

Best advice is to NEVER pick it up by the handle. Carry it by the bottom of the case. I usually put one arm under the case and one arm over the top.

With how much the home weighs, I'm convinced the handle was put there purely for decoration, or for lifting the lid off. I'd be nervous carrying a gem or fireside by its handle, let alone a home.

I have carried a three spring Edison Triumph Phonograph by the top handle a number of times without a problem.

I thought that since it was designed for transporting the phonograph, it should be used, after all, there is a metal plate in the top to help with weight distribution.
If you use the top handle, make sure that the cover is locked on both sides.

Keeping the reproducer from moving while in transient is important.

I agree with your logic, but when it was first designed, the glue holding the lid together was not 110 years old. We've all seen lids where the curved top piece has begun to separate from the ends.
