T. J. Hawtrey,

Post by Hoodoo »

Does anyone know anything about this artist, TJ Hawtrey? I can find nothing about him online, zip, zilch, nada. Even the online discography of Starr Gennett records shows nothing for record number 4589, no title, no artist, nothing.
I will be uploading a video of this record and want to include some info on the artist, but have drawn a blank.

I've currently got access to an online newspaper archive, and thought I'd try my luck there. I was able to find some references to an F.J. Hawtrey, who was a bass and recorded for Gennett. The only record F.J. Hawtrey seems to have made according to my quick search is numbered 4701 and contains "Asleep in the Deep" and "Rocked in the Cradle of the Deep." According to a few of the ads, 4701 was recorded in England.

I don't know much of anything about Gennett, but is it possible the record was given different catalog numbers in the United States and Canada? It seems odd that there were two Bassos with the last name Hawtrey who both recorded the same title for Gennett. It's not much help, but I figured I'd share it anyway!

Great sleuthing, NateO!
It looks like someone got the initials wrong on either the record label or in the article you found.
Thanks,
