1925 credenza wood question

Post by Victrolaman »

Hi i just got a nice 1925 credenza I need to refinish but. Can't tell if it's mahogany or walnut? Looks walnut to me but the outside case is very faded, inside looks like walnut but before I do this can anyone post some pics of their credenzas in walnut and mahogany so I can see ?
Thanks

Do you need to re-finish it, or clean it? My Credenza looked pretty bad, but several cleaning with a lemon-based "clean and feed" made a huge difference, and brought out all kinds of delicate shades in the wood. Kotton Klenser (sp?) would be a great first "layer" then a cleaning polish. Scratches can be partly dealt with by polishing with 000 or 0000 steel wool. I always feel that these lovely old things have earned their scars and gray hair, and unless there is real damage, I prefer to let them look like a dignified, cared-for old age.

Well the finis on the front was so dry if you wiped your hand on it, the color came off, so I think it's to far gone, I was going to try some oooo steel wool and howards restore a finish, if you give me your email address in a personal message I can email some pics and you Le me know your opinion :)
Thanks though for sending me the pics I think mine is walnut by the looks of of
