Victor Brake

Post by PHONOMIKE »

Does anyone know what this style brake is called? I know it's original and I've seen it on other early Victor's but the data book doesn't even show it in the types of brakes.

It's on my early Victor E. Thanks for the help.

Mike

Hi Mike

I haven't seen an official name in a book yet - and I've looked too. I believe it is may just be referred to as a bullet brake - just like later bullet brakes on Victors. I've also seen it described as a plunger type brake. I actually have one on my late model Trademark Berliner and they differ from the "standard top" bullet brake by having the long twist mechanism. Apparently this allowed the 7" and 8" machines to pay 10" discs which would have covered the smaller bullet brake more commonly found on Berliners. I've seen the same brake on a couple of early Victor machines and Ive been assured that though scarce, it was available on the late Trademarks. I'm assuming yours is a pre-dog machine? I love how this shows that Eldridge Johnson was innovating and it's a connection between the Berliners and soon to arrive Eldridge Johnson badged machines. Hopefully someone has or can find a reference in the literature to these brakes.

Michael

I have heard collectors refer to this type as a pinball brake, as in the plunger on a pinball machine.

Mike, I also have a Victor E with the knurled bullet brake instead of a lever style. Wonder when the production change was made?
