Here's a link to Paul Edie's website / database on Victor Talking Machines:

http://www.victor-victrola.com/XVI.htm

Looks like Lucky's machine was made in 1913; the "E" suffix indicates the new-style cabinet, after the "L-door" style was retired.
(The "F"-suffix was added at serial # 84608, and indicated a new style winding key and the exposed "needle" speed indicator.)

I'm sure Paul would love to have this machine's vitae added to his database !

Now to throw a rock into the placid waters, which Walnut is this: American or Circassian ?

Frank, you may want to start by reading this thread at the begining. You will see all you are asking there. The exact day and year it was made & sold is also there along with the type of walnut. Hope this helps you.

What? No instruction manual or record index?

;)

Well, with the pictures, the price did just go up! Looks great, and has the orignal record binders in nice shape. $2k might be high in this market, but you never know. It is really nice.

Gramophone 78,

Thanks for the suggestion... I did as you suggested, and went back and looked at the original sales invoice, and found the serial number, and I believe it does read "Circassian Walnut" in pencil in the blank after "style" - but I 'm having trouble reading the pencil in that area due to the glare from the flash picture.

And while I can plainly see the invoice does list the initial purchase date and terms for the payment plan, I don't see where there's any maunfacturing date mentioned ?

My L-door XVI was made in late '09- early 1910, but was not sold until February of 1911... in Philadelphia, just across the river from its birthplace.

WOW!!! Frank yours sat in the showroom for awhile. I wonder if yours was a Victor re-sell item. I have a Vic 6 like that and with it's paper. I have seen a Victrola like that also.I have heard that some that were either damaged when shipped to the customer or deal were sent back to be fixed and re-sent out.
so, now with that I would like to ask you. Does your Victrola have more than one paper on it??

Regarding circassian....I meant the owner started by telling us it was circassian. I think that is great because it tells me that they have taken the time to do some homework. However, George confirmed that also sice he too owns one.

My machine ( VV-XVI, L-door) has only one license label and one lubrication chart pasted on the inside of the cabinet, on the left when open the drop-down rear door.

There was no other paper with it, other than the original bill of sale, copy attached.

The only "odd" thing about my machine is that the suffix letter has both the letter "B" and the letter "C", one stamped on top of the other... not sure which came first ? C-suffix should mean a tab-brake, but mine has a bullet brake...

As for the original poster mentioning "Circassian" Walnut, I did read that up front, but was also recalling anothr lively thread a few months ago over whether a certain machine was "Circassian" or simply a highly-figured example of American Walnut... in this case, the original bill of sale is strong provenance, and a look at the license label on the cabinet should be the clincher !

In any case, Luckynewbie has a beautiful machine ! :)

De Frank, that is so neat to have the bill of sale with yours too. Very lucky indeed. This is the re-sale label I had mentioned (for you to see). Yes, Newbie has a sweet machine alright. He can PM me anytime.... ;).
