The tenor Richard Tauber was born in Linz, Austria on 16th May 1891 to an unmarried mother and an absent father.
An outstanding interpreter of Mozart, Schubert and Lehar, he made over 700 recordings for Odeon and Parlophone, of which the acoustics (about 120) are the most sought after.
He also had a successful career in films, and tonight I will be watching "Blossom Time" (1934) in which he portrays Schubert.
His last years were plagued by ill health and financial difficulties.
He died in London on 8th January 1948, of complications following an operation for lung cancer.
