Spring question

Post by oceanlinerfanatic »

My friend just got this Phonola s80 portable machine. We tried to crank it but while doing so we heard a cracking type sound. It is obvious that the spring needs to be replaced but I cannot find any size for it online. Does anyone know what size spring these take?

You may need to remove the spring and measure its thickness, width and length to really know for sure. Either way, it's got to come out. It may also be possible to repair the existing spring, depending on the nature of the break.

Here is the Mainspring Guide from The Phonograph Shop-- hopefully this helps. I think you still need to get that spring out & measure but it should give an idea. Have had a few small portables with that same motor (including a Conley) and they had a simple motor. It is going to be easy to get the specs & when you've done the spring you'll feel like it wasn't so difficult after all.
