Were the cylinders that were played in these kinetoscope machines narrations pertaining to the projected images, or just appropriate background musical accompaniment? (I wouldn't begin to imagine that any kind of script that was synchronized to the characters would be possible.)

Hi,
Be sure to see (and read) Ray Phillips' great book on Edison (Class-M) Peephole Kinetoscopes. There was little attempt (surprisingly) to synchronize cylinder sound-tracks with the original films - see the only known example in Ray's book (p. 83).

With all the detective work done and such an interesting topic this would make a WONDERFUL article for the APS magazine...hint hint!
