ELECTROLA C106U PORTABLE GRAMOPHONE

Post by poodling around »

A very interesting and nice looking gramophone.

Once again I don't know much about these but believe that they are very collectable ?

It puzzles me why, if it was made in Germany, it has a 'Harrods' brass plate attached ? Wouldn't Harrods sell UK HMV models ? I haven't seen a Harrods plate like that before - the design is unusual and they normally have a number on as well ?

The metal 'id plate' looks interesting too.

Anyway, here it is:

Also, there seems to be another one of these shown on youtube but that has the HMV dog logo on it.

So the one on ebay is a later model maybe ?

Electric motor as well as spring wind ?

Very interesting gramophone I think.

The 106U is spring as well as electric driven. I have one in blue, and also a 106UP in red, which has in addition to the usual Electrola 4A soundbox, an electric pick-up, enabling it to be plugged into a radio for amplification

This style of Harrods logo looks too recent to be original. It probably came off an item of luggage, and was added in the hope of increasing the machine's value and interest. Harrods never had a German branch and would not have sold an Electrola in the UK. Their first and only overseas branch was in Buenos Aires, Argentina.
