What is your favorite instrumental version of “Limehouse Blues”?

Post by Woody »

I’ve become a bit obsessed with this song lately—specifically, the instrumental versions. I can’t pick a favorite; if forced to chose, I’d go with Fletcher Henderson’s, but I’d immediately second-guess that choice.

What is your favorite?

I'm particular to the Duke Ellington version. Maybe it's because it's the first I heard? I have it on the Victor scroll label. Love the interplay between the woodwinds (I believe one of them is Johnny Hodges), especially love me a diggin' bari sax solo.

I'm not one for favourites (too limiting amongst apples and pears 😁) but two I adore are by the Quintet of the Hot Club of France, and Cliff Jackson (piano).

Even though Carl Fenton isn’t his real name, I like the version by Carl Fenton’s Orchestra on Brunswick…. But I haven’t heard a lot of other versions…

Hadn't thought about that song in years and years--maybe in this century. My favorite is "forced," as it's also my "only": Bobby Maxwell and his Swinging Harps on a late Mercury. The overside, Leroy Anderson's "Plink, Plank, Plunk," actually got much more play from me 'way back when; if memory serves, I especially liked "P.P.P." because a local TV channel played (a bit of) it as the opening theme for an afternoon movie program that I often watched after getting home from school.

I'm kind of partial to the Ted Lewis rendition.
