"Improved Gram-O-Phone Record"

Post by phonogfp »

“On This Day in the History of Recorded Sound…”

August 8, 1900: Eldridge Johnson filed for a U.S. patent for “Sound Record.” This new process would introduce the first use of a paper label on the recorded side of a disc. These would be the “Improved Gramophone Record” which appeared at the same time.

Thanks for the "news", I didn't know there was an official birthday of our beloved paper labels!

All things on earth have highs and lows, but nothing like labels vary from such attractive artworks to such "missed opportunities".

It may be my attraction to antiquated typefaces or simply the association with rarity, but this label is one of my favorites!

Agree, lovely in its simplicity. That wavy lettering gives to it a sort of cute cartoonish look.

Being the very first, it was definitely a nice first step!
