“On This Day in the History of Recorded Sound…”
August 20, 1859: Born: Silas Leachman, prolific pioneer American recording artist and possibly the first commercial recording artist in Chicago, making cylinders for the North American Phonograph Company’s local branch, ca. 1892.
August 20, 1901: Thomas Macdonald was granted a U.S. patent (No.680, 794) for “Combined Graphophone and Motor.” This was the tremendously successful Columbia “Eagle” Graphophone, which sold approximately 150,000 units over its 10-year production life.
August 20, 1969: The last time all four of The Beatles were together in a recording studio.

Paul,
Thanks for posting these, August 20th certainly was a memorable day.
Silas is one of my favorite recording pioneers. You can hear many of his selections released on Victor pre-matrix discs like the one you pictured at The Library of Historical Audio Recordings at i78s.org
