Here is a really, really hard to find accessory for early Columbia Graphophones. Advertised in 1897 - 1899 Columbia Graphophone catalogs, the Simplex Shaving Knife allowed owners of a Columbia A, or AT to shave cylinders. Unlike Edison, Columbia did not make an integrated shaver on their initial A model Graphophones. The Simplex Shaving Knife expanded the potential for owners of Columbia machines. The ad demonstrates how the Simplex Shaving Knife easily slips on to the carriage collar, to the right of the reproducer, and is secured with a large thumb screw.

However at $5.00, a Simplex Shaving Knife added 20% to the purchase price of the entire machine. Based on the very few examples around today, they must not have been purchased frequently.

The Simplex Shaving Knife offered today is an exceptional example. It has excellent original nickel plating. Both the cutter and the often missing shaver hood cover are present. All screws, levers, etc. function as originally designed. I have not cleaned it with any chemicals or polish. Only a damp microfiber cloth was used on this Simplex Shaving Knife. It presents exceptionally well on a Graphophone, and was actually designed to remain on the machine, even when playing a cylinder. The Simplex Shaving Knife really dresses up a Columbia A or AT Graphophone!
